WK5 - Heart & Blood Pathway Flashcards
0
Q
what is the pathway that oxygenated blood takes to get to your fingers?
A
Oxygenated blood flows through from the Left Ventricle through:
- Ascending Aorta
2a. If RIGHT side: Brachialcephalic Trunk > Right Subclavian
2b. If LEFT side: Left Subclavian directly - Axillary
- Radial / Ulnar
- Palmar
- Digital

Q
what is the pathway that blood takes during pulmonary circulation?
A
- Deoxygenated blood enters Right Atrium via Superior Vena Cava (from upper body) and Inferior Vena Cave (from lower body)
- Flows from Right Atrium to Right Ventricle, passing through Tricuspid Valve
- Right Ventricle pumps it through the Pulmonary Valve into the Pulmonary Trunk, which divides into the Left Pulmonary Artery (going into the left lung) and the Right Pulmonary Artery (going into the right lung)
- In the lungs, gas exchange occurs
- Oxygenated blood returns from the lungs via the Left Pulmonary Vein and the Right Pulmonary Vein, and enters the Left Atrium
- Flows from Left Atrium to Left Ventricle, passing through the Bicuspid Valve
- Left Ventricle pumps oxygenated blood through the Aortic Valve into the Ascending Aorta
- Systemic circulation continues from here
2
Q
what pathway does blood take to get to your toes?
A
Same for LEFT & RIGHT side, oxygenated blood flows through from the Left Ventricle through:
- Ascending Aorta
- Arch of the Aorta
- Descending Aorta
- Thoracic Aorta
- Abdominal Aorta
- Common Iliac Artery
- External Iliac Artery (the Internal Iliac goes to groin area, whereas the External Iliac goes to the leg area)
- Femoral Artery
- Popliteal Artery
- Tibial / Fibular
- Plantar

Q
what pathway does oxygenated blood take to get to your head?
A
Oxygenated blood flows through from the Left Ventricle through:
- Ascending Aorta
2a. If on RIGHT side: Brachialcephalic Trunk > Right Common Carotid
2b. If on LEFT side: Left Common Carotid - Common Carotid splits into External Carotid & Internal Carotid
- External Carotid goes to Maxillary, Mandibular, and Temporal/Opthalmic branches
- Internal Carotid goes into the brain structures
- External Iliac Artery (the Internal Iliac goes to groin area, whereas the External Iliac goes to the leg area)
- Femoral Artery
- Popliteal Artery
- Tibial / Fibular
- Plantar
