What is epistaxis?

What causes epistaxis?
Irritation, trauma, infection, foreign bodies, tumors
What concerning our blood vessels can cause epistaxis?
Hypertension
What is a reason concerning our blood that can cause epistaxis?
Blood dyscrasia
What does blood dyscrasia mean?
It is a nonspecific term meaning disease of the blood such as thrombocytopenia
What type of systemic treatment can cause epistaxis?
Chemotherapy and anticoagulants
Antidote for IV heparin
protamine sulfate
Antidote for warfarin
vitamin K
Treatment for an anterior nosebleed
Lean forward, reassure them, lateral pressure with ice, nasal tampons, tell them to avoid blowing nose
Why is a posterior nosebleed an emergency?
Can’t stop the bleeding as easy, can’t pinch
How to stop a posterior nosebleed
posterior packing (balloon catheter)
Something to assess for posterior nosebleed
Assess respiratory status
5 things to do for someone with a posterior nosebleed
Oxygen, humidification, bedrest, pain control and oral care
If patient has a posterior nosebleed teach them to
avoid aspirin and NSAIDs that will thin their blood
