Windshear Flashcards
What conditions may indicate windshear?
- Thunderstorm activity
- Virga
- Pilot reports
- Low level windshear alerting system
Where is the WINDSHEAR settings on the OPT?
Available as a thrust rating selection in Takeoff Performance.
What is the effect of selecting WINDSHEAR on the OPT?
- Highest engine thrust rating
- Windshear VR is calculated (up to 20kts higher)
- Assumed Temperature Reduction is not allowed
- V speeds are normal, however Windshear VR is in amber and rotation can be delayed until reaching it.
Recommended actions if taking off in suspected windshear:
- Full rated takeoff thrust
- Use F5, F10, F15
- Use the longest suitable runway, provided it is clear of known windshear areas
- Consider increasing VR to Vr+20kts.
Recommended actions for approach and landing
- Use F30
- Be stabilised early by 1000ft
- Use glide path indications to detect deviations from the flight path early
- Add an appropriate airspeed correction, up to 15kts
- Avoid large thrust reductions / trim changes for airspeed increases as they may be followed by airspeed decreases.
When must we perform the Windshear Escape Manoeuvre?
Aural alert - “WINDSHEAR, WINDSHEAR, WINDSHEAR”
Visual alert - WINDSHEAR on both attitude indicators.
Unacceptable flight path deviations:
- 15kts airspeed
- 500fpm vertical speed
- 5º pitch attitude
- 1 dot G/S
- Unusual thrust lever position for a significant period of time
What is the response to an amber WINDSHEAR on the ND and a “MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY” call ?
Manoeuvre as needed.
Difference between Windshear Warning vs Predictive Windshear Warning
Windshear Warning = produced by GPWS - in actual windshear. Carry out the escape manoeuvre.
Predictive - Wx Radar - no two tone siren.
What is the effect of a predictive windshear warning on takeoff?
Reject the takeoff
What is the effect of a predictive windshear warning on approach/landing?
Carry out the escape manoeuvre, or perform a go-around with pilot’s discretion.
