When did WHMIS first become a law?
1988
Under WHIMIS every container must be labelled. What are the 3 types of labels used?
Supplier label, workplace label, other mans of identification (are used when workplace labels would be impractical
What is the danger signal word used for?
Is used for high risk hazards
What is the signal word warning used for?
Used for less severe hazards
What are the employers responsibilities?
- properly labelling controlled products that are used, stored, handled, or disposed of in your workplace
- making SDS available to workers and making sure you know how to use the information provided
- ensuring workers receive education and training about how to safely store, handle, and use the chemicals in your workplace
- providing the PPE you require after making every effort to reduce or eliminate hazards
What are the suppliers responsibilities?
Providing a safety data sheet and applying a label showing the required information as part of selling a hazardous product
What are your responsibilities?
- following Safe work procedures, especially when working with hazardous products
- completing the WHMIS training provided by your employer
- using the recommended control measures when they are required
What 6 things must the supplier label include?
- product identifier
- supplier identifier
- pictofram(s)
- signal word
- hazard statements
- precautionary statement(s)
What does the product identifier on a supplier label contain?
The exact name of the product as it appears on the container and SDD
What does the supplier identifier on a supplier label contain?
The name, address and telephone number of the company which made or packaged the product
What does the pictogram on a supplier label contain?
Hazard symbol within a red square set on one of its points
What does a signal word contain on a supplier label?
A word used to alert the reader to a potential hazard and to indicate the severity of the hazard
What does the hazard statement on a supplier label contain?
Brief, standardized sentences that describe the hazards of a product, and indicate the degree of the hazard.
What does the precautionary statement(s) on a supplier label contain?
Standardized advice about how to minimize or prevent harmful effects of a product. Instructions may include: • use of the product • PPE • storage • first aid • emergency measures
What information must a workplace label include?
- product name
- Safe handling procedures
- A reference to the SDS
What information does the safety data sheet contain?
- Identification
- Hazard identification
- Composition/information on ingredients

What does the identification on the SDS contain?
Product name, other identification, product use/restrictions, Canadian supplier name and address, emergency phone number
What does the hazard identification on the SDS contain?
Hazard classification, label elements, pictogram/signal word/hazard and precautionary statements, and other hazards (not classified) such as molten metal hazard.
What does the composition/information on ingredients on the SDS contain?
List of chemical ingredients in the mixture and its concentration
What does the fire fighting measures on the SDS contain?
Specific hazards (how it could ignite or cause a fire), what should be used to extinguish it, and any special PPE
What does the first aid measures on the SDS contain?
Specific first aid measures, the most important symptoms, effects, and any medical or special treatment required
What does the accidental release measures on the SDS contain?
Personal precautions, protective equipment, emergency procedure, and methods and materials for containment/cleanup
What does the handling and storage on the SDS contain?
Precautions for safe handling, and conditions of safe storage, including any other products that should not be stored together with it
What does the exposure controls/personal protection on the SDS contain?
Expose your guidelines, engineering controls, protective measures such as PPE, and hygiene considerations
What does the physical and chemical properties on the SDS contain?
Physical state (gas, liquid, solid), odour, appearance, PH, melting/freezing/boiling point, flashpoint etc.
What does the stability and reactivity on the SDS contain?
If it will react when combined with other materials
What does the toxicological information on the SDS contain?
How does it enter the body, delayed an immediate affects, and chronic affects from short term and long term exposures
What does the ecological information on the SDS contain?
Info about if products bills or leaks, including toxicity in the environment, how easily it biodegrades, and how mobile it is in the soil
What does the disposal considerations on the SDS contain?
Info about the safe handling for and methods of disposal
What does the transport information on the SDS contain?
Info that is important if you’re going to ship product by Road, rail, ship or air
What does the regulatory information on the SDS contain?
Info about safety, health and environmental regulations specific to the product
