Vehicle Maintenance, Fluid Service/Lubrication Flashcards
What does a grease job entail?
Lubricating high friction points in the steering system, suspension, and driveline.
When changing an engines oil filter what should you NEVER do?
Never use a filter wrench to tighten the filter, over tightening will smash the O-ring and cause leakage. Only tighten filters by hand.
What does a lubricating service typically involve?
- Checking fluid levels
- Inspecting condition of all fluids
- Adding fluid as needed
- Locating fluid leaks and other obvious problems
- Grease job
- Changing engine oil and filter
- Changing automatic transmission fluid
What do you use to pinpoint the source of internal part noises and problems?
Stethoscope
What will happen to the oil when it is over filled?
Will cause oil to foam, which reduces it’s lubricating abilities
What lubricant is specially used for rubber door weather stripping?
Silicone lubricant
A good, all around lubricant that can be used on easy to reach hinges and latches is?
Chassis grease
What lubricant is excellent for door and truck locks?
Graphite
Check automatic transmission or transaxle fluid with the engine running. Check engine oil with engine off.
True or false
True
What are the break fluid cautions?
- Brake fluid will damage painted surfaces.
- Do not mix with any petroleum oil it will damage brake seals.
- Do not leave brake fluid containers open. It will absorb moisture and hinder the fluids performance.
What are the steps in checking automatic transmission fluid (ATF)?
- Make sure vehicle is level
- Engine is running
- It’s at operating temperature
- In park or neutral (hand brake on)
Where do you usually find the automatic transmission dipstick?
Normally behind engine, and to one side
How do you know when to change the automatic transmission fluid on a vehicle?
If it smells burnt, has discoloration (looks dirty)
What is engine coolant made out of?
Mixture of water and antifreeze
When do you change an engines coolant?
Every two years max
What happens to engine coolant after prolonged use?
Coolant will deteriorate, become corrosive and filled with rust.
What issues will prolonged engine coolant cause?
Maybe result in premature water pump, thermostat, and radiator failure
When performing a complete Lubrication service be sure to also lubricate which parts of the body?
High friction points of the cars body
Hinges, and latches on doors, hood and trrunk
What are the functions of the engine Lubrication system?
- Reduces friction and wear between moving parts
- Helps transfer the wear between moving parts
- Clean the inside of the engine b removing contaminants
- Cuts power loss and increases fuel economy
- Absorbs shock between moving parts to quiet engine operation
What does vehicle maintenance include?
Any operation that will keep a car in good running condition.
A cars warranty can become void if improper ______ or incorrect _______ procedures are used.
Fluids, service
Where should the oil line sit when checking oil fluid?
Between the ADD and FULL
Power steering fluid is checked by removing the ________ from the power steering pump. The engine should _____ running.
Dipstick, not be
What happens to rubber and plastic parts when exposed to petroleum based lubricants?
Deteriorate
What is a service interval?
The amount of time in miles (km) or months between recommended service checks or maintenance operation.
What are the 4 body lubricants?
Engine oil
Graphite
Chassis grease
Silicone lubricant
When doing a general inspection what are the 6 things we should check over?
Hoses Fan belts Wiring Tires Exhaust system Steering system
What is a oil film?
It’s what separates the engine parts from each other
What does a oil film prevent?
Prevents metal on metal contact, this would cause parts to wear rapidly
What is the velocity number used for?
Is used to rate the thickness of engine oil.
The higher the number the thicker that oil. A lower number would mean thinner oil.
What is a 10 weight oil?
It acts like a thinner oil in cold temperatures for good starting
What is a 30 weight oil?
Like a thicker oil at high temperatures for good oil pressure
What are oil additive used for?
Are designed to provide oil with the special qualities that engine lubricating oil must have
What do the letters printed on the oil container entail?
It’s a set of letters that denote how well the oil will perform under operating conditions
Why is ATF dyed red?
To prevent confusion of this substance with other lubrication oils
What are the characteristics good grease must have?
Consistency Stability Oxidation resistance Ability to protect against friction Feed ability
