Safety Flashcards
Benefits of safe working Practices
- eliminates the pain and discomfort of personal of injury
- eliminates the loss of equipment or the expense of repair
- eliminates lost time and lost wages
- contributes to the psychological well-being of all employees
- fulfills the moral obligation a worker has to the employer and fellow employees
Workers rights
- The right to know (about hazards)
- The right to refuse (unsafe work)
- The right to participate (in health and safety)
- The right to exercise these rights without fear of discriminatory action
Define Near Miss
A condition or unplanned event that did not result in an injury, illness, or damage to equipment, or property, but had the potential to do so.
Define Carbon Monoxide
Colourless, odourless, very poisonous gas formed by incomplete combustion (example: a running engine produces CO gas)
Tetanus
An acute infectious disease that usually enters the body through cuts or wounds; characterized by spasmodic contractions or rigidity of some voluntary muscles and frequently referred to as “lockjaw”.
What is the percentage of unsafe acts and the percentage of unsafe conditions in the work place?
80% unsafe acts and 20% unsafe conditions.
What is a mushroom head?
A rounded hammer head is an example.
Poor lighting or glare may cause_______.
Headaches, eye strain, and tiredness.
What causes Asphyxiation?
Breathing toxic or poisonous substances in the air.
What is the most dangerous substance that can be in the air of a shop?
Carbon Monoxide
When should filter masks be worn?
When working around any kind of air impurities, for example painting a vehicle, or welding steel
Should you use #5 filter googles to observe any form of electric welding?
No
What type of glasses should you wear when welding with oxy-acetylene?
Goggles with #5 filter
What is the appropriate lens strength for arc or MIG welding?
10 - #12
What do bump caps protect you from?
Minor cuts and abrasions. Not CSA approved, not for impact/electrical impact.
When is foot protection required?
Is required where there is a danger of impact from falling/rolling objects, punctures from stepping on sharp objects, electrical hazards, or slippery uneven surfaces.
Does not protect from all crushing or electrical hazards.
Safety glasses
More impact and heat resistant than normal glasses.
Chemical safety goggles
Fit close to the face protect from splashes, vapours, gases, dust, mist and fumes; have regular or hooded ventilation for splash protection.
Face shield
Provide full face protection but are not considered eye protection; should be used with chemical safety goggles or safety glasses.
Welding helmets
Are used for welding, cutting, brazing and burning; Protect ice from welding light using a welder’s helmet fitted with a filter shade that is suitable for the type of welding you are doing
What is the difference between standard ear muffs and active noise reduction ear muffs?
Standard: blocks the noise
Active noise reduction: microphone and speakers in the muffs produces sound waves to cancel outside nouse
Metal mesh gloves
Protect against cuts or punctures
Leather gloves
For sparks or contact with rough surfaces
Fabric gloves
Improve grip and help insulate against cold/heat
Silicone gloves
Provide protection from hot objects or liquids
What are the most common respirators?
Disposable particle respirators (often called dust masks) and chemical cartridge respirators.
What does a particle respirator do? What shouldn’t you do with a particle respirator?
Removes particulate from the air as it is breathed through the respirator.
NEVER be used when there might be inadequate oxygen, in the presence or radioactive substances, hazardous gasses or vapours, or when the concentration or type of particulate is unknown.
Chemical cartridge respirators should never be used when?
When there is not enough oxygen, or there is an unknown concentration of the contaminant.
What is Class N, Class R, and class P for particulate respirators?
Class N: dusts not containing oil
Class R: oil resistant
Class: P oil proof
What are the 4 internal combustion engine emissions?
Carbon monoxide (CO2) Hydrocarbons (HC) Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) Sulphurs Oxides (Sox)
What are the 2 major effects carbon monoxide can have on your body?
It’s lowers the oxygen level in the bloodstream
It impairs the release of oxygen in the muscle
Where can you find asbestos dust?
Found in brake linings and in clutch discs
When using an electric grinder
- always keep the tall rest adjusted close to the grinding wheel
- Hold small objects with a vice grip pliers
- wear goggles/face shield and keep the machine face shield and position
- be careful not to strike the grinding wheel, it can shatter and explode when spinning
When operating a drill press
- Wear goggles and a face shield
- When the drill bit is about to break through the workpiece let up on the drill pressure, this will keep the drill bit from catching in the hole
- never leave the chuck Key in the drill chuck, it could fly out and hit someone if the drill press is accidentally turned on
- locate and inspect the operation of your shops drill press before turning it on, find the on/off button, feet, lever, truck, and other components
When connecting jumping cables use appropriate procedures
Connect the positive (red) jumper to the positive terminal first
Next connect the other cable to the car frame no to the battery
What way do you turn the floor jack Handle in order to start lifting a car?
Towards the right
Which way do you turn the floor jack handle in order to lower a car?
Towards the left
What is the chemical chain reaction or also known as the domino affect?
Carbon in fuel combines with oxygen in the air, which produces carbon dioxide, and heat. Heat causes more carbon to react to more oxygen, and the chain reaction continues.
What type of fires is a class A fire extinguisher used for?
Wood, rags, rub is, clothes
What is the symbol and colour for a class A fire extinguisher?
A triangle, and the colour green
What type of fires is a class B fire extinguisher used for?
Gasoline, oil, freeze, paints, and thinners.
What is the symbol and colour of a class B fire extinguisher?
A square, and the colour red
What type of fires is a class C fire extinguisher used for?
Motors, switch panels, and electric wiring
What is the symbol and colour of a class C fire extinguisher?
A circle, and the colour blue
What type of fires is a class D fire extinguisher used for?
Combusting metals: Magnesium, aluminum, potassium, sodium, titanium
What is the symbol and colour for a class D fire extinguisher?
A star, and the colour yellow
Why must you keep sparked away from the top of a battery?
Because hydrogen gas hangs around the top of batteries, if ignited the battery can blow
What are three ways that chemicals and solvents can enter the body?
Lungs, swallowed, through the skin
Where do you position the floor jack when raising a car?
Rear axle housing, frame, suspension arm, or reinforced section of a uni-body
If you use the drill press how do you secure your work piece?
Use a portable vise or a C-clamp
When connecting a battery charger, what safety precautions should you take?
Make sure the battery charger is disconnect from the wall outlet, and that your area is vented
How could a mushroom head tool cause injury?
The head of the tool might shatter on impact into sharp fragments that can fly and hit someone.
Asbestos found in brakes and clutches is harmful and can cause……
Cancer
Where do you position the jack stand when securing a car?
On a secure area of the frame, near the floor jack. If raising both front or rear wheels, place stands to either side of the floor jack near the wheels.
What is the cause of most eye injuries?
Flying particles
