Whitings Model Of Information Processing Flashcards
What does whitings model show?
Shows the way that we take information from the environment and formulate a movement.
What are the 7 stages of Whiting’s Model of Information Processing
(in order)?
DSP TEMP
• Display (environment)
• Sensory organs
• Perceptual mechanism
• Translatory mechanism
• Effector mechanism
• Muscular system output data
• Feedback data
What is the display part of whitings model?
Display - the sporting environment, e.g everything that is happening on a rugby field
What is the sensory organs part of whitings model?
Sense organs - the eyes take information from the display e.g a rugby player seeing an opponent kick the ball.
What is the perceptual mechanism?
Information from the display is processed and selective attention removes irrelevant information.
E.g the rugby player removes the movement of substitutes on the sideline
What is the translatory mechanism?
Information is compared to long-term memories and a decision is made, e.g the player decides where to move to.
What is the effector mechanism?
A nerve impulse is sent from the brain to the muscles via motor neurons, e.g. nerve impulse arrives at the hamstrings and quadriceps.
What is the muscular system output data in whitings model?
The muscles perform the action, e.g. the player begins to run into position
What is feedback data in whitings model?
The effectiveness of the action is measured and used to inform future decisions, e.g. if the player was in the wrong position they will alter their positioning next time.
