Describe Speyside as a region, as you might table side.
Speyside is home to over half of Scotland’s distilleries, with 50+ currently operating.
There’s a stylistic range that makes the region hard to define, but you’ll generally find sweet single malts here.
Light and floral, heavy and sherried… and exceptions abound, peaty as well. Some of the most famed distilleries here include Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Macallan.. although Macallan still labels as Highlands.

Describe the region of Islay, as you might for an inquiring guest.
Home to only eight distilleries, but home to the famed peaty, sea sprayed signature style of Scotch.
Describe the region of Campbeltown, as you might for an inquiring guest.
This was once the Scotch whisky capital, with over 30 operating distilleries in the 19th century. Two world wars and a depression took its toll… Spingbank and Glen Scotia were the only 2 distilleries that operated into modern times, with Glengyle reopening in 2004.
Typically saline, fruit and grass driven with moderate peat aromas.
What are Campbeltown’s 3 operating distilleries?
Springbank
Glen Scotia
Glengyle
Describe the Lowlands region as you might to a guest.
This is the region closest to England. After hardship and depression, only 3 distilleries made it to the modern era.
The Lowlands are characterized by a very light and floral style, typically without any peat. Reflecting proximity to England, triple distillation was historically the routine. These are the “aperitifs” of Scotch whiskies.
What 3 Lowlands distilleries survived depression into the modern era?
Auchentoshan
Bladnoch
Glenkinchie

Describe the Highlands region of Scotch production, as you might to a guest.
This is the 2nd largest region, by density of distilleries. Because of the range, a style is hard to generalize. The western distilleries tend to be lightly smoked, the north are spicy and salty and the south & east are light and sweet.
The SWA includes the Islands region as part of the Highlands, although many consider it separate.
