  • mass meetings were held at Spa Fields Islington, in support of electoral reform and relief from hardship and distress.
  • a meeting on 2nd December 1816, descended into rioting, instigated by a revolutionary group called the Spenceans (lead by Thomas Spence).

    St. Peter’s Fields in Manchester to support Henry Hunt speaking ab parliamentary reform
  • local magistrates sent in local yeomanry to disperse the crowds and 11 people were killed and over 400 were injured.

  • George IV attempted to divorce his wife, with the help of the Prime Minister who attempted to pass a bill through parliament, known as the Bill of Pains and Penalties.
  • public opinion was in support of Caroline, so the government dropped the divorce
  • lead to criticism of the King and Liverpool’s government, from both inside and outside of parliament, and riots were widespread.
