Why was the draft incredibly unpopular under LBJ?
The system introduced by LBJ saw the creation of local draft boards in which all men of fighting age were considered. The board could choose who to send which led to bias and pressure from the Local Community.

On the 1st of December 1969 the First Draft Lottery was held in which people aged 18-26 were selected at random and were told to enlist by a particular card.
Why did Nixon’s draft policy face significant pushback?
Many people were outraged as people aged 18 couldn’t vote or drink but had to fight. Although Nixon argued that the gameshow aspect made it fair many WASPS exploited the system by sending their children abroad (Canada) when they were due to serve. Many students burned their draft cards in protest despite the fine being £10’000.

It began when 6 veterans marched in New York City in 1967, membership quickly grew to 30’000. They aimed to show the horror of war and the poor treatment soldiers received once they arrived back home. People did not understand post traumatic stress disorder and many were told simply to get on with their lives. In April 1971 they dumped their medals outside of congress.

On the Ground reporters began to report on issues of soldiers going into battle high on drugs, the massacres of entire villages such as My Lai, Spraying toxic defoliant on villagers and soldiers being rewarded with beer and ice-cream if they have a high kill count.
