How did the Second World War effect the role of the US on the World Stage?
The US had become incredibly involved in Global affairs and it became clear that it could no longer return to isolationism and instead become a leading world power. For example they were a founding member of the UN.
Why did tensions start to build with the Soviet Union?
Although the two had fought alongside each other tensions were very much there. In May 1947 Truman said that the US represented one way of life and the USSR another, they were in competition and communism needed to be contained.
What policy did the ideals of Containment lead to economically?
The Marshall Plan was established which was a style designed to provide aid to war torn countries. For example the US gave $3.3 billion to the UK to help them recover from the war whilst also helping West Germany modernize it’s economy to speed up the recovery process.
What other aspects of foreign policy did the US engage in after the War?
They helped found NATO which was an agreement to defend other members if they came under attack. They also airlifted food into Berlin after the USSR placed a blockade on it in 1948. 3’475 Tons of food were dropped on Berlin.
How did the US respond to the First Soviet Nuclear Test in 1949?
They were seen to be preparing for a nuclear attack, the Federal Defense Administration organized evacuation plans and gave out pamphlets with advice which included wearing wide brimmed hats. Schools carried out regular duck and cover exercises.
What was the ulterior motive of the Federal Highways act in regards to nuclear attack? Why was further preparation limited?
It was designed for the rapid evacuation of cities in case of an attack through the construction of various roads. The government could only advise states on what to do any many people to action into their own hands with a fallout shelter costing $1’300 in 1958.
How much did the US fleet of atomic bombs increase from between June 1947 and June 1948?
The number of atomic bombs increased from 13 to 50.
Why did the arms race begin to develop?
After the Soviet Union tested and built their first atomic bomb both sides began to mass produce them at a great economic cost, this was based on the MAD doctrine where both sides had enough to obliterate each other. It influenced the US political scene for years to come.
How was the Armed forces impacted by the Second World War?
A large standing permanent army was now in place which placed some strain on the economy however, it also contributed in the sense that it provided work and was often a customer for various industries such as food.
