Impact of the Korean War on the Presidency Flashcards
How did the Media drift under Truman?
The media initially supported Truman under the expectation that they would receive insider information in return. However, Truman held back not wanting to stoke anti-communist sentiment. In turn they began to challenge Truman and took information from other sources such as the Republicans.
How did Truman attempt to restore trust with the media?
In August 1950, Truman began televised briefings and in turn sent 200 reporters to Korea. However, he made it hard to regain this trust for his limited war. In turn his public standings were poor as he wasn’t communicating with them effectively.
What negative effects did the sacking of MacArthur have?
He received little support for his decision with both Republicans and Democrats saying that he should escalate in Korea. Some even took it further and argued that they should directly help Taiwan.
Why did Truman struggle to find peaceful resolutions with the Soviet Union?
Many in Congress would often argue that this was going against the ideals of the Truman Doctrine leading to constant bickering in Congress.
What effect did the Korean War have on confidence in the Presidency?
The behaviour of many sections of the Government led to early murmurs of disillusionment. Which only worsened as the 60s and 70s approached.
