Q

Describe the history of Toxteth.

A
Saxons established it. It became a large royal hunting forest under King Johns rule in 13th century and remained a forest for 300 years after. Opened up for farming during 16th century and during 17th century small-scale industry increased making use of water power out of damned stream.
Industrial revolution saw a copper works in 1772 and then a ceramics factory. The river became lined with shipbuilding yards.
Toxteth was given to an ambitious housing scheme creating large villas and wide roads. Attractive Greenfield site fr developers who built for middle class population to escape congestion —> became a dormitory settlement.
In 19th century demand for space increased so back-to-back poorly constructed housing built behind villas —> to house dock workers and their families, overcrowding led to typhoid and cholera epidemics.
Over 150 years toxteth changed from a small community to inner city suburb.
