Held every 10 years
What does the census include today?
Personal information: date of birth, gender, educational qualifications, ethnicity, religion etc
-> essential for govt planning + allocation of resources
How is data for the census collected?
The source of data is the household - one person living alone or a group of people living at the same address
how do TV + movies represent a place?
- wide angled views of geographical context. can also zoom in on detail of a place
- represent lives of local people -> can also build up fictional representation of places eg EastEnders inner city
characteristics of rural places
- closely knit, supportive community
- more conservative
- more homogenous ethically
- less mobility
advantages of census
- precise, accurate, reliable quantitative data
- census data is objective, carefully planned
- census data is formally collected by law every 10 years
advantages of a photograph
- a general qualitative view
- visual impression of the environment -> can show broad characteristics
