What are the main subtypes of T-cells Flashcards
T-cell subtypes
Naive t cell, Cytotoxic t cells, Helper t cells, Regulatory t cells, Memory t cells
Naive t cells
Responds to new pathogens that the immune system has not yet encountered by looking for antigen presenting cells. Once found the naive cell receives a signal to mature into an effector cells which can be cytotoxic, helper and regulatory
Cytotoxic T cells
Have the primary job to kill toxic/target cells. Upon recognition, their purpose becomes the removal of virally infected cells, bacteria and tumour fragments through apoptosis
Helper t cells
Extremely important to cell immunity because they are required for most adaptive immune responses. They become activated when presented with antigens, then they multiply and secrete cytokines that summon macrophages and cytotoxic t cells to infected site.
Regulatory t cells
Tasked with stopping an autoimmune response once the threat has been eliminated. Reg t cells stop helper and cytotoxic t cells from taking up space or accidentally attacking healthy cells until they go through apoptosis
Memory t cells
Formed after an infection and are extremely important because they have the ability to expand into large numbers of effector T cells upon exposure to familiar antigens. They remember pathogens and infectious cells faster than others
