Provide a specific example of monoclonal antibody with bi-specific action Flashcards
Monoclonal antibody
Lab made antibodies generated by identical B cells which are clones from a single parent cell.
Produced ex-vivo
Bi-specific action
Antibodies engineered to bind to two different epitopes, or antigens at the same time
Example of drug
Catumaxomab
What disease is drug used for
Catumaxomab is used for the treatment of patients with malignant ascites, which is the build up in spaces within the abdomen. It accelerates the destruction of tumour cells by different cells, has strong communication with immune cells
Drug mechanism
Catumaxomab is able to bind to tumour cells, T-cells and accessory cells
What problem does it resolve
Catumaxomab is able to destroy epCAM positive tumour cells which can be found in other types of cancers such as breast, colon and prostate cancer, as it is an epithelial cell adhesion molecule and aid the rapid proliferation of tumours with epithelial origin
