Fat Body Mass
Essential fat
Required for normal functioning
Stored in yellow marrow, and organs/muscles
3% males; 12% females
Storage fat Subcutaneous fat accumulates beneath skin Visceral fat accumulates around organs Energy reserve in case of starvation Cushions and protects organs Helps regulate body temperature Required for normal functioning 12% in men and 15% in women
Body Mass index
BMI- weight/height 1underweight 2healthy 3overweight -not very accurate
Obesity
BMI>30 Body fat 25% in men and 32%in woman -it has doubled in the past 35 years Canada 25% of adults are -poses some serious health risks such as heart disease
Eating Disorders and body image
-anorexia and bulimia
-Health risks: amenorrhea, osteoporosis
Factors and signs:
Dissatisfaction with body image
Distorted thinking
Unrealistic expectations
Excessive self-criticism
A fear of being overweight
Obsessive dieting and preoccupation with food
Anorexia/Nervosa
- fear of gaining weight so they don’t eat
- use extreme excersise to reduce body weight
- Physical problems: body metabolizes protein (from muscles and organs), hair loss, dry skin, amenorrhea, reduced bone mass, brittle nails, etc
Psychological problems: depression, high suicide rate, etc.
Highest death of all mental disease: usually from damage to internal organs
Bulimina Nervosa
-binge eating vomits after
-difficult to notice bc of same weight
-large loss or gain of weight frequently

Female athlete Triad
- result of over training and not eating enough
- gymnasts, dance and figure skating
- eat more calories during training season
- some athletes require a certain body weight which makes them have extreme diets
