WEEK9- Assisting the paramedic Flashcards

1
Q

what is an airway filter

A

protects the patient, breathing system, and equipment from potential microbial contamination.
efficiency= 99+ percent
also acts as a physical barrier between airway adjunct and catheter mount

Q

whats a laryngoscope

A

used to perform a skill (direct laryngoscopy)
used to achieve optimal visualisation of the glottis for the purpose of oral endotracheal (et) tube insertion/removal of foreign body

13
Q

whats capnography

A

measures the amount of carbon dioxide at the end of each breath

can help determine the adequacy and effectiveness of ventilation

the level of co2 normally found in air is small, when person breaths out co2 level rises and measurement is taken.

14
Q

how to set up a capnography

A

co2 reader will be plugged into zoll (side of machine)
sampling line can be placed in airway circuit after the catheter mount
will generate a reading

15
Q

what is a ventilator

A

helps with patients whose alveolar ventilation is inadequate to maintain normal partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide

can be achieved by mechanical ventilation or manually generated positive pressure.

this would be attached to an et tube/igel .

16
Q

how many controls are on a ventilator

A

12

17
Q

what is tidal volume

A

is the amount of air that moves in or out of the lungs with each respiratory cycle.

18
Q

how many ml does average male and female have

A

500ml for men 400ml for women

19
Q

how many litres does average bvm hold

A

approximately 1 litre (which is why we only press half way)

20
Q

what is cannulation

A

iv=vein
so iv canulation is the insertion of a plastic tube (catheter)into a peripheral vein.
needle is withdrawn after venepuncture whilst flexible plastic catheter remains in the vascular compartment

iv canulation gains access to the body’s circulation and an iv cannula will be used to deliver either drug/fluid therapy

21
Q

what are the different sizes of peripheral cannulas

A

24 guage= smallest
14 guage= largest
yellow(24G) blue (22G) pink(20G) green(18G) grey (16G) orange (14G)

22
Q

whats a giving set

A

iv therapy= delivered intrabenously via a bag of fluids where a drug can be added.
the fluids are connected to the pateints vascular access devicee (either intraosseous or intravenous) vis length of plastic tubing.

iv drug= slow rate over long time into circulatory system.

23
Q

how to set up a giving set

A

turn the flow controller off (roll down)
insert spiked end of giving set into fluid bag
hang fluid on drip stand
squeeze transparent drip chamber until theres 1.5cm of fluid in the chamber
start the flow by rolling up
run fluid down whole way to check air bubbles

24
