How long should a primary survey be conducted in?
60-90 seconds
What’s the correct order of the primary survey?
DANGER (smart, ppe, end of bed assessment-pat) RESPONSE (avpu), consent, AIRWAYS,BREATHING, CIRCULATION
What does pat stand for and mean?
Patient assessment triangle, APPEARANCE (eyes closed/lying on the floor), BREATHING ( present/normal), CIRCULATION (pale/sweaty/cyanosed)
What does avpu assess and what does it stand for?
assesses a patients level of consciousness (LOC). Alert, verbal, pain, unresponsive.
What is a lack of capacity?
An inability of patients making decisions because of an impairment or disturbance in the function of the brain
What to do with consent with an unconscious patient?
Work in their best interest under the doctrine of necessity and mental capacity act 2005.
What are the types of airway management?
An OPA, NPA, IGEL
What is a patent airway?
When the airway is open and clear
What are the airway maneuvers
remember to inspect first (scissor technique) 2 types of manoeuvres are head tilt chin lift or jaw thrust
How to work out the respiratory rate and heart rate
count chest rise and fall for 15 seconds then x4
feel and count pulse for 15 seconds then x4
4 types of pulses
carotid(neck ), radial(wrist), bracial(middle of elbow and bicep), femoral(public bone)
What’s primary positive and primary negative?
Primary negative: no issues with any of the primary survey
Primary positive: there was an issue and intervention is needed
