Week Two: Cardiorespiratory Diseases Flashcards
What is the equation for cardiac output?
SV X HR
Systemic and pulmonary circulations are equal to…
Volume
What is a closed system?
No leaking, no backward flow, no “pop off” valves
What is Mitral Valve Insufficiency?
Backflow present, more common in smaller breeds
What is bacterial endocarditis?
Diastolic murmurs, lesions growing on heart valves, cauliflower looking
What is right atrial tumor?
Hemangio sarcoma (malignant form)
What is cardiac tampinad?
Tumor explodes in heart and blood fills sac, too much pressure (can’t hear heartbeat)
What is intravascular thrombosis?
Usually cats, large clot, needs emergency surgery, animals won’t be able to use hind legs
What are cardiomyopathies?
“Sick heart muscle” humans would need a heart transplant, can develop pleural effusion, predisposition in boxers
What is Patent Ductus Arteriousis (PDA)?
Usually seen in German Shepherds, Poodles, Irish Setters
Artery does not close up so blood goes into wrong areas in the heart
Fixed with surgery of chest, murmurs are VERY obnoxious, hereditary so the animal cannot be bred
What is Pericardial effusion?
abnormal amount of fluid between the heart and the pericardium, which is the sac surrounding the heart
What is brachycephalic airway syndrome?
NO thermal regulation or exercise tolerance (breathing in through nose to helps cool animal down)
What are “roaring horses”?
Nerve defect, starts in chest and is responsible for holding laryngeal pillars open
What is laryngeal hemiplegia?
Halfway paralysis of larynx
What is a collapsing/collapsed trachea?
Trachea collapses and air can’t get through, sounds like a goose honking
Yorkshire terriers are the number one breed for this
