Week Eight: Urinary System Flashcards
What is microscopic hematuria?
More than normal RBC on urine sediment exam
What is dysuria?
Painful urination
What is stranguria?
Difficulty in passing a urine stream
What is retrohydropulsion?
Technique to remove stones from the urethra
True or false
High amounts of protein ALWAYS means something is wrong
True
High protein quantities in the urine but the presence of normal sediment is probably due to what?
Leakage from the kidney itself
What are some ways we can detect proteinuria?
ERD Healthscreen, albustix, ERD renal healthscreen, Dextrostix, azostix
What are some ways to manage proteinuria?
Restrict dietary protein intake, anti-inflammatory drugs for glomerulonephritis, control BP, manage higher BP (with analapril), control antigen-antibody complex formations with immunosuppressive therapy, decrease nitrogen but increase quality of protein
What are some examples of ways to manage proteinuria? (like food and drugs)
k/d, krill oil, bayer
Proteinuria usually results in…
Renal insufficiency
What happens during canine renal failure?
Urine SG fixed in a diluted range, phosphorus rises, anemia begins, PU/PD is non-stop, BUN/Creatinine rises, acidosis becomes chronic, quality of like declines
How to manage renal failure
Restrict low quality protein intake, restrict phosphorus intake, control metabolic acidosis, reduce inflammation, control salt excesses
What are some examples of ways to manage renal failure? (like food or drugs..)
k/d, u/d, teaching clients to administer fluids, aluminum hydroxide gel to bind phosphorous
What is pseudocyesis and how do we attempt to treat it?
False pregnancy; exaggerated material behaviors, increased prolactin with decreased progesterone
-Can attempt to treat with progesterone
Explain “open or closed” when dealing with pyometra
Open: Not sick, chronic vaginal discharge, cervix is “open”
Closed: Cervix is “closed”, pus isn’t going anywhere, contains toxic neutrophils, patient will act sick
