Week 9 Vocab Flashcards
Atelectasis
A condition in which one or more areas of your lungs collapse or don’t inflate properly
Apnea
Not breathing for several seconds and sometimes up to a minute while sleeping
Bradypnea
Abnormally slow breathing
Cheyne-Strokes
an abnormal breathing pattern which commonly occurs in patients with decompensated congestive heart failure and neurologic diseases, in whom periods of tachypnea and hyperpnea alternate with periods of apnea
Cyanosis
a bluish discoloration of the skin resulting from poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood
Exhalation
an expiration of air from the lungs
Expectorate
cough or spit out phlegm from the throat or lungs
Hyperinflation
monetary inflation occurring at a very high rate
Hypo ventilation
The state in which a reduced amount of air enters the alveoli in the lungs, resulting in decreased levels of oxygen and increased levels of carbon dioxide in the blood
Hypoxemia
An abnormally low level of oxygen in the blood
Incentive spirometer
A medical device used to help improve a patient’s lung functioning
Inhalation
The act of breathing in
Inspiration
Breathing in
Kussmaul breathing
A abnormal respiratory pattern characteized by rapid, deep breathing, often seen in patients with metabolic acidosis
Pneumothorax
ccurs when air leaks into the space between your lungs and chest wall
Sputum
Mucous material from the lungs that is produced (brought up) by coughing
Stridor
Abnormal, high-pitched musical breathing sounds
Suctioning
Sucking sputum out of the lungs when a person cannot cough it up themselves
Suctioning
The act of sucking up sputum in the lungs for somebody who is unable to cough up their own secretions
Tachypnea
Abnormal rapid breathing
Ventilation
The exchange of air between the lungs and the atmosphere so that oxygen can be exchanged for carbon dioxide in the alveoli (the tiny air sacs in the lungs)
Nasal cannula
Medical tubing that hooks up to oxygen to provide adequate oxygenation to the tissues
Non-rebreather mask
A non-rebreather mask is primarily used to deliver oxygen to treat hypoxia, wherein the arterial blood oxygen saturation is less than 90 percent
Tracheostomy
a surgical procedure to create an opening through the neck into the trachea (windpipe)
