Vocab Week 8 Flashcards
Alginate
Alginate dressings are derived from seaweed made of soft non-woven fibres, and are available as pads, ropes or ribbons. Alginate dressings are extremely lightweight, absorb many times their own weight, form a gel-like covering over the wound, and maintain a moist environment. They are best used for wounds with significant exudate.
Approximated
to draw two tissue surfaces close together as in the repair of a wound or to draw the bones of a joint together as in physical therapy.
Collagen
A fibrous protein that provides strength and elasticity to skin, bones, cartilage and connective tissues
Dehiscence
A splitting of tissue
Debridement
the medical removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue to improve the healing potential of the remaining healthy tissue
Evisceration
the removal of the contents from an organ or an organ from its cavity
I.e. Disembowelment when removing viscera from abdominal cavity
Eschar
dead tissue that falls off (sheds) from healthy skin. It is caused by a burn or cauterization
Excoriation
The act of abrading or wearing off the skin; a raw, irritated lesion
Exudate
a mass of cells and fluid that has seeped out of blood vessels or an organ, especially in inflammation
Friction
The act of rubbing the surface of an object against another
Granulation tissue
A kind of tissue formed during wound healing, with a rough or irregular surface and a rich supply of blood capillaries
Hydrocolloid
hydrocolloid wound dressing
impermeable to oxygen and carbon dioxide, the colloid interacts with tissue fluid to form a nonadhesive gel
Inflammation
Inflammation is a process by which the body’s white blood cells and substances they produce protect us from infection with foreign organisms, such as bacteria and viruses.
However, in some diseases, like arthritis, the body’s defense system – the immune system – triggers an inflammatory response when there are no foreign invaders to fight off. In these diseases, called autoimmune diseases, the body’s normally protective immune system causes damage to its own tissues. The body responds as if normal tissues are infected or somehow abnormal.
Maceration
the softening and breaking down of skin resulting from prolonged exposure to moisture
Ischemia
an inadequate blood supply to an organ or part of the body, especially the heart muscles
