Week 6 Vocab Flashcards
Babinski reflex
A reflex used to determine adequacy of the higher (central) nervous system. The Babinski reflex is obtained by stimulating the outside of the sole of the foot, causing extension of the big toe while fanning the other toes. Babies show this; whereas, neurologically mature children and adults typically don’t except in the presence of spinal cord or brain injury.
Presbyopia
farsightedness caused by loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye, occurring typically in middle and old age
Cognition
the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses
Disorientation
Disorientation is a type of altered mental status to personal identity,
location, date, time& present situation
Glasgow coma scale
the most common scoring system used to describe the level of consciousness in a person following a traumatic brain injury
National patient safety goals
A set of goals put forth to increase patient safety in healthcare
Never events
serious, largely preventable patient safety incidents that should not occur if the available preventative measures have been implemented
Stereognosis
The perception of the form of an object by means of touch
Consensual constriction
In a normal response the eye which the light is shined has pupillary constriction (direct reflex) AND the contralateral pupil also constricts (indirect or consensual reflex)
Rinne test
Compares bone and conduction (tests for hearing) with the use of a vibrating fork on the mastoid bone
Weber test
Another hearing loss test that determines whether a patient has conductive or sensorineural hearing loss
Deep tendon reflexes
used to determine the integrity of the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system, and they can be used to detect the presence of a neuromuscular disease
Perception
the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment
Accommodation
the process by which the vertebrate eye changes optical power to maintain a clear image or focus on an object as its distance varies
