Constipation
Infrequent passage of hardened stool
Chyme
A predigested, acidified mass of food that passes from the stomach into the small intestine
Diarrhea
Frequent passage of loose, liquid stool
Fecal impactation
Retention of a large mass of hardened stool
Feces
Waste; undigested food; inorganic material
Flatus
Gas (flatus) is made in the stomach and intestines as your body breaks down food into energy
Cleansing enema
an enema, usually composed of soapsuds, administered to remove all formed fecal material from the colon
Hemoccult testing
A fecal occult blood test checks stool samples for traces of blood that cannot be seen with the naked eye
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anal canal. This common problem can be painful, but it’s usually not serious.
Peristalsis
a series of wave-like muscle contractions that moves food to different processing stations in the digestive tract
Retention enema
a medicinal or nutrient enema specially formulated so that it will remain in the bowel without stimulating the nerve endings that would ordinarily result in evacuation
Stoma
An opening into the body from the outside that is created by a surgeon
Defecation
Act/process of eliminating feces/ stool
Ileus
Loss of neurological impulse to a small segment of the bowel; halts peristalsis to that area
Incontinence
Uncontrolled defecation
