Week 9 - Posterior arm muscles Flashcards
TRICEPS BRACHII
Attachments:
Proximal:
Long head: infraglenoid tubercle of scapula
Lateral head: posterior humerus superior to radial groove
Medial head: posterior humerus inferior to
radial groove
Distal: olecranon process of ulna
Action: elbow extension
NS: radial n.
ANCONEUS
Attachments:
P: lateral epicondyle of humerus
D: olecranon process and superior posterior ulna
Action: elbow extension; dynamic stabiliser of elbow
NS: radial n.
You want to determine if triceps is responsible for Dominic’s pain – i.e., a tear in the olecranon insertion. What test could you use?
- Passively move Dominic’s elbow into full flexion
- Passively move Dominic’s shoulder and elbow into full flexion
- Passively move Dominic’s elbow into full flexion and pronation
- Passively move Dominic’s elbow into full flexion and supination
- Passively move Dominic’s elbow into full shoulder flexion and supination

Think of the triceps stretch over head. We flex the shoulder and flex the elbow. Doing this slowly will help determine a tear at the olecranon insertion of the triceps brachii.
