What is comprehension?
Comprehension is the act of simultaneously extracting and constructing meaning from text. It involves decoding, connecting to the meaning and thinking deeply.
What are the 3 levels of complexity of comprehension?
1- literal meaning
2- interpretive meaning (reading between the lines)
3- inferential meaning (reading beyond the lines).
What are 4 indicators of comprehension?
Accuracy
Fluency
Orchestration
Phrasing
What is a miscue analysis? What is a miscue?
A miscue analysis is an assessment of reading which collects information about reading ability as well as comprehension.
A miscue is an unexpected response when reading aloud and is assessed based on quality, not quantity (is meaning still maintained?).
What are the 3 causes of a miscue?
- Graphophonic: the relationship between the letter and sound.
- Semantic: the sense made, does the sentence make sense?
- Syntactic: structural components of the sentence or phrase.
What are the 8 types of miscues?
- correction
- hesitation
- insertion
- no response
- omission
- repetition
- reversal
- substitution
