Q
What theories are related to the model of instruction?
A
- ZPD (Vygotsky): zone between what students can do independently and with assistance, teacher has a role in developing independence in tasks in ‘potential’ zone.
- Scaffolding (Wood, Bruner & Ross): providing students with the necessary scaffolds and support to achieve the task.
- Gradual release of responsibility (Gallagher & Pearson): allowing students to slowly take over the responsibility of learning until they are able to complete it independently.

Q
What 5 things are involved in the model of instruction for literacy? (3 necessary, 2 possible)
A
- Modelled instruction: teacher demonstrates the skill to the whole class, showing steps involved, key features and an exemplar.
- Guided instruction: with small group, teacher reiterates a targeted skill, models it to group, guides their attempt then allows for independent construction of text (reading or writing).
- Independent instruction: all students engage in specific skill or task and employ strategies and steps modelled by the teacher. Assistance available if required.
- Teacher read aloud: (not always) to whole class to promote enjoyment of challenging text and model effective reading.
- Plenary: whole class sum up of lesson focus and time for sharing.
