What is literacy?
Literacy is the ability to understand and evaluate meaning across R/W/S/L/V/R, it involves building skills across discipline areas to effectively participant in society.
What genres are usually associated with the science KLA? What are some challenges to literacy in science and teaching implications as a result?
Genres: procedure, factual description, information report.
Challenges: quality textbooks, scientific terminology, scientific language similar to everyday language e.g. forces.
Teaching: time for vocab and talk, teach reading strategies for scientific texts, develop knowledge.
What genres are usually associated with the HSIE KLA? What are some challenges to literacy in science and teaching implications as a result?
Genres: factual recount, discussion, exposition.
Challenges: discipline knowledge, vocabulary, textbook quality, research skills.
Teaching: good resources, explicit modelling how to read variety of texts - maps, graphs, timelines etc., develop understanding that meaning and perspectives can change over time based on place/culture etc.
What are the cross curriculum priorities? Use an example and link it to 3 KLAs.
- ATSI histories and cultures
- Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia
- Sustainability.
Sustainability connects to: - English (communicating perspectives, sharing knowledge).
- Science (investigating the environment, interactions between ‘spheres’ and systems).
- HSIE (global issues, changes in society, multiple perspectives of sustainability).
