Week 2 (assessment and reporting) Flashcards
What is the purpose of assessment?
The purpose of assessment is to:
- gather evidence based on the outcomes (syllabus/curriculum)
- clarify what students do and don’t know
- report to students, parents, the school and community
- inform future teaching practice.
What are the 3 purposes for assessment?
Assessment FOR learning (formative)- informs future planning, teaching and learning. Allows for teacher, peer and student self-reflection on learning and provides feedback.
Assessment AS learning (formative)- students reflect on own learning goals and processes (metacognitive practices).
Assessment OF learning (summative)- evidence of learning based on the outcomes for the purpose of reporting and comparing to outcomes and cohort.
What are the 2 types of assessment?
Formal assessment (standardised)- asks the same questions in the same way to all students. Used as a uniform test of understanding so results can be compared e.g. NAPLAN. Informal assessment- informs teaching and learning, is ongoing and can be self, peer or teacher assessment with feedback e.g. observation, work samples, discussion.
What is the cycle for planning and programming? (5)
1- What evidence is required?
2- How will it be gathered?
3- what content/experienced will allow students to demonstrate this?
4- how will feedback be provided?
5- Is there sufficient evidence to show the outcome has been met?
(note: reflection should be ongoing - before, during and after teaching).
