What kind of surgery is a joint replacement surgery?
An elective surgery: scheduled, planned
Effective in reducing pain and improving function for patients with osteoarthritis or other joint destruction conditions
Total Hip Replacement Posterior, lateral and hemi precautions
1) No hip flexion more than 90 degrees
2) No Hip and
3) No hip internal rotation
Total Hip Replacement Anterior Precautions
1) No bridging past neutral
2) No hip external rotation and extension
What are some reasons for elective surgery?
- Extreme pain
- Other treatments did not work
- Limited movement in the joint
- Functional limitations
Total Shoulder Replacement Precautions
- Non-weight bearing
- No pushing, pulling or lifting
- Arm in sling at all times except for dressing and bathing
- No AROM to shoulder
Medical management: fracture is reduced (open or closed)
What is Open vs Closed?
Open: surgical
Closed: Non surgical
What are some Psychological Factors - Potential factors affecting orthopedic patients?
1) Change to a more dependent status
2) Chronic disability, chronic or surgical pain (e.g., osteoarthritis)
3) Life-threatening disease (e.g., cancer)
4) Possibility of delirium or cognitive decompensation
What are some intervention examples
- Positioning
- Assist in splinting, skin care
- Range of motion exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Transfer training
- ADL and IADL training
- Patient education: strategies, equipment
