Q

What are the 5 areas of interest to improve posture?

A

1) Pelvis and hip joint

2) Trunk

3) Lower extremities

4) Upper extremities

5) Head

17
Q

What is the hammock effect?

A
  • Pelvis is uneven
  • Thighs rotate inward
  • Knees come together
  • Forward slide in the wheelchair seat
  • Affects trunk and head position
18
Q

What can happen if the wheelchair seat is too high vs too low?

A

Too high:
- Too much pressure through buttocks
(Discomfort, skin breakdown)

Too low:
- Blood can be reduced
(Discomfort due to digging into the back of thighs
Possibility of sliding out of the chair)

19
Q

What is the role of the armrests?

A
  • Add length to support UE
  • Add additional postural support at the trunk
  • Optimal alignment (e.g. edema,contractures)
  • Maximize comfort
20
Q

What will happen if the head rest on a wheelchair is too high vs too low?

A

Too high:
- Strain in the neck, head flexion

Too low:
- Resting on cervical spine: no support of the head
- Head extension
