Week 9 Flashcards
Describe and give an example of obstructive respiratory disease.
Impaired airflow into and out of the airways, decrease FVC1. Eg. Emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis.
Describe and give an example of restrictive respiratory disease.
Reduced expansion of the lung parenchyma with decreased lung capacity. Eg. pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary oedema, obesity.
Describe asthma.
Intermittent/ reversible airflow obstruction.
Bronchial hyper responsiveness triggered by infections, smoke, allergies, medication, exercise.
Shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.
Reversible with treatment.
Describe chronic bronchitis.
Excess sputum production most days of the week for more than 3 months.\
Caused by excessive exposure to repeated irritants.
Increased sputum production = narrowing of airways.
Decreased SpO2
Describe emphysema.
Destruction of elastic tissues of the lung, alveolar walls and pulmonary capillaries.
Irreversible and progressive.
Decrease elastic recoil, increase airway resistance, V/Q mismatch, decreased SpO2, increased CO2
What are some considerations for pulmonary rehab?
Suitability for exercise, co morbidities, exercise capacity, medications, sputum clearance.
What type of training would be prescribed for someone with respiratory conditions?
Individualised.
3-5 session for 30 min, intermittent, large muscle groups, resistance training 8-12 reps 1 set, mobility training for the upper body and respiratory muscle training.
