Week 5 Flashcards
Describe the stages of ligament injury.
Destruction - retraction of ligament ends, form clot, replaced with heavily cellular infiltrate
Repair - Produce scar tissue/ collagen by fibroblasts, organisation of collagen fibre
Remodelling - Continued ligamentisation
What is the healing time for the 3 grades of sprains?
Grade 1 = 2-8 weeks
Grade 2 = 2-6 months
Grade 3 = 6-12 months
What is the healing time periods for a ligament graft?
Early graft healing = 0-4 weeks
Proliferation = 4-12 weeks ( weakest between 6-8 weeks)
Ligamentisation = 12 weeks -12 months
What movements are likely to cause an ACL injury?
Cutting/pivot manoeuvre, single leg landing.
Typically occurs when in 10-30 degrees of flexion with knee in valgus position
What are the types of ankle injuries?
Lateral ankle complex sprain (85%), plantar flexion/ inversion Syndesmotic sprains (10%), hyperdorsiflexion Medial complex sprains (5%) dorsiflexion, eversion, abduction.
