Maslows hierarchy of needs
A basic structure of motivation tht refer to five level of human needs employees require to be fulfilled at work. If the lower ones are not met the upper ones cannot work
Physicological needs
What human needs to survive. Food shelter clothing
Safety
Feeling of security- protection and job secuirty
Social needs
Having a sense of belonging- in organisation wise sense of belonging to the firm or teams
Esteem needs
having status and recognition- can be done by high status job titles
Self acltualisation
Becoming what you wanted to be- achieving target and fulfilling potential- promotion oppurtunities
Herzberg 2 factors of motivation
Argues that there are 2 factors that firms can adjust to influence motivation. Herzberg was arguing about the importance of non-financial factors for motivation. The two factors were motivators and hygiene
Motivators
Factors that directly motivate people to work harder like responsibility at work, achievement, being recognised and having meaningful work.Motivation ranges from satisfaction to no satisfaction
Hygiene factors
Relates to working conditions, pay and job security,company policies. These factos can de-motivate but if present do not motivate persons to work harder. It ranges from dissatisfaction to no dissatisfaction.Herzberg acknowledged the opposite of dissatisfaction as a no dissatisfaction not as satisfaction. If they are not met employees feel demotivated. Refer to the bottom two of maslows hierarchy of needs.
what does herzberg say about both of them
Motivate by using motivators and ensure hygiene factors are met, needing management attention.
Google application
For self esteem needs there are recognition oppurtunities like gthansk or peer to peer program. For self actualisation google promotes it employess annually however it announced there will be fewer promotion. The security in maslow needs are significantly lowered due to layoffs and will continue.Google needs to ensure that the remaining employees are feeling not anxious by creating transperancy and ensure the hygiene factors are met to not demotivate.Because of this there is dissatisfaction in hygiene factors and the motivation factors are not working clearly.
Tuckman and jensen
Explain the stages of team development.It is a continous clycle as people leave and join. Can also go backwards because people joining in and changing the group norms and goals.
First element of Jensen and Tuckman team formation
Forming- forming of the group, members becoming familiar
Second element of tuckman and jensen
Storming- there are tension withing the group.In storming if someone does not want to work toghether with some it can go to other groups.
