Argues that there are 2 factors that firms can adjust to influence motivation. Herzberg was arguing about the importance of non-financial factors for motivation. The two factors were motivators and hygiene

Hygiene factors

A

Relates to working conditions, pay and job security,company policies. These factos can de-motivate but if present do not motivate persons to work harder. It ranges from dissatisfaction to no dissatisfaction.Herzberg acknowledged the opposite of dissatisfaction as a no dissatisfaction not as satisfaction. If they are not met employees feel demotivated. Refer to the bottom two of maslows hierarchy of needs.

A

For self esteem needs there are recognition oppurtunities like gthansk or peer to peer program. For self actualisation google promotes it employess annually however it announced there will be fewer promotion. The security in maslow needs are significantly lowered due to layoffs and will continue.Google needs to ensure that the remaining employees are feeling not anxious by creating transperancy and ensure the hygiene factors are met to not demotivate.Because of this there is dissatisfaction in hygiene factors and the motivation factors are not working clearly.

Application to google

A

First in the forming phase members become familiar with, google uses team bonding to create a familiar environment and trust.Secondly in storming and tension all of the members have equal time to say what they want, creating a safe place to say whatever they think. Thirdly, in the norming there is a psychological safety by group members telling when they took a risk to encourage others to take risks and share their risky ideas too. At the last performing part everyone tells their ideas based on the data to avoid groupthink and perform logically.

Motivation lead people to work hard, be enthuiastic and do more than minimum of responsibilities.

De-motivation can happen if

A

The hygiene factors are not met like dissatisfied from supervision, poor working conditions.Also the motivators for people can be absent to like no recognition, not having meaningful work. Google is having demotivated employees due to not offering job security and not telling the reasons people are getting fired thus the motivators are not working.Thus to ensure this demotivation is erased google should be transparent in the reason of firing and how much people are going to be fired.
