Week 8 Muscle Lab Flashcards
Connective tissue specifically connecting a muscle to a bone
Tendon
Essentially the muscle equivalent of a plasma membrane of the muscle cell
Sarcolemma
Connective tissue surrounding fascicles (groups of muscle cells)
Perimysium
Individual muscle cells with multiple nuclei & mitochondria
Muscle Fiber
Specialized form of smooth endoplasmic reticulum found in muscle & stores Calcium
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
One subunit within a muscle fiber, made of many sarcomeres in a row.
Myofibril
Flat, broad, tendon-like structure joining muscle to bone or muscle to muscle.
Aponeurosis
Connective tissue surrounding each individual muscle fibers (cells)
Endomysium
Portion of a muscle containing multiple muscle fibers (cells)
Fascicle
Contractile element of muscle made of actin & myosin myofilaments (proteins)
sarcomere
Connective tissue surrounding entire muscle & aids routing of nerves & blood
Epimysium
Place in order from largest to smallest

4 special characteristics of muscles
Excitability
Contractility
Extensibility
Elasticity
Excitability
able to receive and respond to stimuli
Contractility
ability to shorten when stimulates
Extensibility
ability to stretch
