Week 8 Muscle Lab Flashcards
Connective tissue specifically connecting a muscle to a bone
Tendon
Essentially the muscle equivalent of a plasma membrane of the muscle cell
Sarcolemma
Connective tissue surrounding fascicles (groups of muscle cells)
Perimysium
Individual muscle cells with multiple nuclei & mitochondria
Muscle Fiber
Specialized form of smooth endoplasmic reticulum found in muscle & stores Calcium
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
One subunit within a muscle fiber, made of many sarcomeres in a row.
Myofibril
Flat, broad, tendon-like structure joining muscle to bone or muscle to muscle.
Aponeurosis
Connective tissue surrounding each individual muscle fibers (cells)
Endomysium
Portion of a muscle containing multiple muscle fibers (cells)
Fascicle
Contractile element of muscle made of actin & myosin myofilaments (proteins)
sarcomere
Connective tissue surrounding entire muscle & aids routing of nerves & blood
Epimysium
Place in order from largest to smallest
muscle, sarcomere, myofibril,
muscle fiber, fascicle, myofilament

4 special characteristics of muscles
Excitability
Contractility
Extensibility
Elasticity
Excitability
able to receive and respond to stimuli
Contractility
ability to shorten when stimulates
Extensibility
ability to stretch
Elasticity
ability to recoil to resting length
Two examples of circular muscles
Orbicularis Oris
Orbicularis Oculi
Tenses skin of palm of hand
Palmaris Longus
Muscle creating tension in skin of neck
Platysma
Allows power stroke as in hammering & makes a āVā across lower back
Latissimus Dorsi
Slender muscle of inner thigh
gracilis
Large calf muscle on posterior side
Gastrocnemius
Muscle deep in cheek
Buccinator
Muscle that facilitates bringing leg toward midline
Adductor Longus
Vertical muscle on anterior surface of thigh
rectus femoris
Allows flexion about the elbow & found on anterior surface of humerus
biceps brachii
pronates the arm
pronator teres
muscle for pushing or punching & looks like serrated edge of a blade
serratus anterior
muscle aiding extension of toes
extensor digitorum longus
muscle attaching sternum, clavicle, & mastoid process of skull
sternocleidomastoid
muscle deep to the gastrocnemius
soleus
separates thoracic cavity from abdominal cavity
diaphragm
runs in transverse direction across torso & is a deep muscle
transverse abdominus
allows shrugging of shoulders & muscle is diamond shaped on upper back
trapezius
muscle on anterior surface of chin
mentalis
runs vertically on anterior surface of torso
rectus abdominus
muscle that starts at the lateral side of hip & attaches at medial side of knee
Sartorius
muscle high on lateral thigh with long fascia connecting around the knee
tensor fascia latae
two posterior thigh muscles, slim muscle on top, broader muscle below
Semitendinosus
Semimembranosus
Extends & flares the fingers
Extensor digitorum
Muscle aiding dorsiflexion
tibialis anterior
