Often associated with IMPROVED coping as they may learn to cope better as they deal with stress throughout life

Reactions to stressful experiences - reactions occur after secondary appraisal - when we have these reactions, they must impact on the final outcome
Categories of coping strategies
- Problem focussed or emotion focussed
- Approach or avoidance oriented
What is active coping?
- Person ACTIVELY INITIATES an approach to attempt to alleviate the distress
Example of active coping
- Discussion to identify problem
- Brainstorming possible solutions
What category of coping strategies are involved with active coping?
- Problem & emotion focussed coping strategies
What is problem focussed coping?
- Attempts to solve, alter or eliminate the problem
- Tries to expand resources to deal with the situation
Examples of problem-focussed coping
- Confront the problem
- Collect information about the issue
- Seek social support
What is emotion focussed coping?
- Palliative coping
- Focussing attention in the emotional response
- May not alter the problem but can make the situation more manageable
Example of emotion-focussed coping
- Process and talk about how they feel
- Try to put the problem in perspective
- Limit the time spent in negative thinking

1) Instrumental: taking an active stance to help someone manage a problem
2) Informational: advice-giving
3) Emotional: sharing thoughts and feelings
4) Esteem: expressing confidence or encouragement
