Week 8 Flashcards
What are the contents of the popliteal fossa?
Popliteal artery and vein Tibial and common fibula nerves Terminal branch of the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh Popliteal lymph nodes and vessels Small saphenous vein
What is the popliteal fossa?
A space on the posterior aspect of the knee joint
It is a passage for most of the neurovascular structures of the leg
Boundaries:
SL: biceps femoris
SM: semimembranosis and semitendonosis
IM: medial head of gastrocnemius
IL: lateral head of gastrocnemius
Roof: skin and fascia
Floor: popliteal surface of the femur, oblique popliteal ligament, popliteus muscle and fascia
What is the difference between sural and crural?
Sural means calf
Crural means leg
What is the pathway of the popliteal artery?
Continuation of the femoral artery, after the adductor hiatus
Passes inferiorlaterally through the popliteal fossa
Ends at the inferior border of popliteus by dividing into anterior and posterior tibial arteries
What are the facial compartments of the leg?
Anterior
Posterior
Lateral
What are the bones of the foot/ tarsal bones?
Talus Calcaneus Navicular Cuboid Cuneiforms Metatarsals Phalanges
What are the borders of the anterior compartment of the leg?
Lateral surface of the tibia Medial surface of the fibula Interosseus membrane Inter muscular septum Crural fascia
What are the contents of the anterior compartment of the leg?
Anterior tibial artery and vein Deep fibulae nerve Tibialis anterior Extensor digitoxin longus Extensor hallucinations longus Fibularis tertius
Tibial is anterior
O: lateral condyle of the tibia, superior half of the lateral surface of the tibia and Interosseus membrane
I: medial and inferior surface of the medial cuneiform and base of first metatarsal
NS: deep fibular nerve
A: dorks flexes ankle and dorsiflexes ankle
Extensor digitoxin longus
O: lateral condyle of the tibia, superior fourth of the medial surface of the fibula, adjacent Interosseus membrane
I: extensor expansion, middle and distal phalanges of lateral 4 toes
NS: deep fibular nerve
A: extends lateral 4 digits and dorsiflexes ankle
Extensor hallucis longus
O: Middle part of the anterior surface of the fibula and adjacent Interosseus membrane
I: dorsal surface of the base of the distal phalanx (first digit or big toe)
NS: deep fibula nerve
A: extends big toe and dorsiflexes ankle
Fibularis tertius
O: inferior third of the anterior surface of the fibula, adjacent Interosseus membrane
I: dorsum, base of fifth metatarsal
NS: deep fibular nerve
A: dorsiflexes ankle and aids in eversion
