Gastrocnemius
Superficial aspect of the posterior compartment of the leg
O-
Lateral head:
Lateral side of the lateral condyle of the femur
Medial head:
Popliteal surface of the femur, superior to medial condyle
I-posterior surface of the calcaneus via the calcaneal tendon
N- Tibial nerve
A-plantar flexion of the ankle when knee extended, raises heel during walking, flexes the knee
Soleus
Superior aspect of the posterior compartment of the leg
O- posterior head and superior ¼ of the posterior fibula, soleal line and middle 1/3 od the medial border of the tibia, tendinous arch extending between bony attachments
I- posterior surface of the calcaneus via the calcaneal tendon
N- tibial nerve
A-Plantar flexes the ankle
Plantaris
Superficial aspect of the posterior compartment of the leg
O- inferior part of the lateral supracondylar line of the femur, oblique popliteal ligament
I-posterior surface of the calcaneus via calcaneal tendon
N-tibial nerve
A-weakly assists gastrocs in plantarflexing the ankle and flexing the knee
Popliteus
Deep part of the posterior aspect of the leg
O- lateral surface of the lateral condyle of the femur and lateral meniscus
I- posterior durface of the tibia, superior to soleal line
N-tibial nerve
A-flexion of the knee, lateral rotation od the demur, medial rotation of the tibia when knee is flexed
Flexor hallucis longus
Deep part of the posterior compartment of the leg
O- inferior 2/3 od posterior surface of the fibula, some adjacent interosseous membrane
I-base of the distal phalanx of the toe
N-tibial nerve
A-flexes the great toe, weak ankle plantarflexor, supports medial longitudinal arch of foot
Flexor digitorum longus
Deep aspect of the posterior compartment of the leg
O-medial part of the posterior tibia, inferior to the soleal line and by a broad tendon to the fibula
I-base of the distal phalanges of the lateral 4 digits
N-Tibial nerve
A-Flexes lateral 4 digits, plantar flexes ankle, supports longitudinal arches of the foot
Tibialis posterior
Deep aspect of the posterior compartment of the leg
O-Interosseus membrane, posterior tibia inferior to soleal line, posterior fibula
