OINA of compartments of the thigh (semester 2 year 1) Flashcards
Semitendonosis
Posterior compartment of the thigh
O- ischial tuberosity
I- Pes anserine
N- tibial branch of the sciatic nerve
A- Extends thigh, flexes leg, medially rotates knee when flexed, when thigh and leg are flexed, these muscles can extend the trunk
Semimembranosis
Posterior compartment of the thigh
O- ischial tuberosity
I- Pes anserine
N- tibial branch of the sciatic nerve
A- Extends thigh, flexes leg, medially rotates knee when flexed, when thigh and leg are flexed, these muscles can extend the trunk
Biceps femoris
Posterior compartment of the thigh
O- Long head- Ischial tuberosity
Short Head—linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line of the femur
I- lateral side of the head of the fibular
N- Long head (tibial branch of sciatic nerve) Short head (common fibular branch of the sciatic nerve)
A- Flexes leg, rotates it laterally when knee is flexed, extends thigh
Adductor Longus
Medial compartment of the thigh
O-Body of pubis inferior to public crest
I-Middle Third of Linear Aspra of femur
N-Ant. branch of Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
A- Adducts Thigh
Adductor brevis
Medial compartment of the thigh
O- Body and inferior ramus of pubis
I- Pectineal Line and proximal part of linea aspera of femur
N- Obturator Nerve (ant division) (L2-L4)
A- Adducts thigh, tiny amount of flexion
Adductor magnus
Medial compartment of the thigh
O-Adductor-Inferior ramus of pubis, ramus of ischium.
-Hamstring- Ischial Tuberosity
I-Adductor-Gluteal Tuberosity, linea aspera, medial supracondylar line.
Hamstring-Adductor tubercle of femur.
N- Adductor part-Obturator Nerve (post. branches) (L2-L4)
Hamstring- Tibial branch sciatic nerve (L4)
A- Adductor- Adducts thigh and flexes thigh
Hamstring- Extends thigh
Gracilis
Medial compartment of the thigh
O-Body and inferior Ramus of Pubis
I- Superior Part of Medial surface of the Tibia
N- Obturator Nerve(L2,L3)
A- Adducts Thigh; flexes leg; assists medial rotation of the leg
Obturator externus
Medial compartment of the thigh
O- Margins of Obturator foramen and obturator membrane
I- Trochanteric Fossa of femur
N- Obturator Nerve (L3,L4)
A- Laterally rotates thigh; Steadies head of femur in acetabulum
Pectineus
Anterior compartment of the thigh
O- Pectineal line of superior pubic ramus
I-Pectineal line of femyr
N- Femoral nerve
A- Adducts and flexes thihg, assists in medial rotation
Quadratus femoris
Anterior compartment of the thigh
Made up of rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and vastis intermedialis

Psoas major
Anterior compartment of the thigh
O- Sides of T12-L5 vertebraeand IVD’s, TP’s lumbar vertebrae
I- Lesser trochanter
N- anterior rami of lumbar nerves
A-Flex thigh, stabelise hip, flex and sidebend trunk
iliacus
Anterior compartment of the thigh
O- iliac crest and fossa, sacral ala
I- lesser trochanter of the femur
N- Femoral nerve
A- Flex thigh at hip, stabelises hip joint
Sartorious
Anterior compartment of the thigh
O- ASIS, superior aspect of the greater sciatic notch
I- Superior medial tibia (pes anserine)
N- femoral nerve
A- Flexion, abduction, external rotation of the hip, slight flexion of the knee joint (linked with medial rotation at knee)
