week 7 - immune system Flashcards
neutrophil
most predominant type of granulocyte in blood
innate immune response
eosinophil
granulocyte
defence against parasitic infections
atopic reactions such as asthma
easily stained by eosin
basophil
low numbers in normal blood
similar function as eosinophils and mast cells
stained by basic dyes (contain acidic proteins)
macrophage
phagocytic cells
innate immunity
b cells
differentiate into antibody secreting plasma cells as part of the specific immune response
t cells
cytotoxic T lymphocyte - kills virus inceted cells
helper t lymphocytes - activate other cells e.g. b-cells
NK cells
large, granular lymphocytes which form part of the innate immune response
lack antigen-specific receptors, they can detect and attack some virus-infected cells
mast cells
found mainly near small blood vessels
when active release substances from granules that affect vascular permeability
granules contain histamine and heparin
primary lymphoid tissues
thymus and bone marrow
where immune cells are created and matured
produced in haematopoietic stem cells
bone marrow
two types - red and yellow
red - haematopoiesis
yellow - adipocytes
