Week 7 - Exam prep Flashcards
Monocytes and Macrophages
circulate in blood for 24 hours
long lived - mitochondria
1st to respond – orchestrates a response
chronic inflammation
Neutrophils
short lived - 5 days
WBC
Major in acute inflammation
killing pyogenic bacteria and fungi
Eosinophills
Allergic disease - release histamine
some phagocytic activity
Basophils and Mast cells
release granules when binds to C3a and C5a
causes adverse symptoms of allergy
acute inflammation
Natural killer cells
non-phagocytic
target virally infected and tumour cells
Mediators
Lymphocytes - B cells
Responsible for making antibodies
Present antigen
Helper T cells
enhance the production of antibodies by B cells.
Recruits macrophages
Cytotoxic T lymphocytes
kill virus and tumour cells
regulatory t cells
required for immunological tolerance,
shut down T cell mediated imunity towards the end of a reaction to restore homeostasis
