Discuss the view of control vs responsibility in regards to addiction
We are caught between moral responses such as blaming the addict and scientific explanations such as the addict being controlled by disease
What are the medical and psychological accounts of addiction
Addiction is the outcome of biology, genetics and impulsiveness with leads to lack of control.
It is medical problem requiring treatment
What are moral accounts of addiction
Addicts are in control of their own poor choices. There is little sympathy for these people and they are often discriminated, stigmatised or punished
What is the liberal account of addiction
Individuals should freely choose drugs bc it is no different than eating fast food. They should only be responsible for harms if they hurt someone else.
people should be informed so they can make and education choice
Disease model of addiction
Addiction is a disease of the will drugs hijack behaviour due to changes in the brain.
Therapy and medical treatment us required but punishment is seen as not helpful bc it is not the persons fault
What is the self medication hypothesis
Drug use is a result of trauma or chronic pain and used to treat anxiety, intrusive thoughts anger ect. As people rely on drugs for treatment more and more the drug use became its own issue
What is meant by harm reduction
Harm reduction: reduce risk behaviour and allow access to safe settings
What is the role of social science in addiction
View of drugs is based on the norms of society
How does sociology effect drug use
Drug use is shaped by political, economic, social and cultural forces. E.g War on drugs means we are scared of drugs but at the same time there are shifts in social attitudes amd higher disposable income to spend on them
How does population health effect addiction
Drug use if more prevalent in different locations.
Poor areas under educated areas and unemployed areas lead to more drug use.

Drug use is learned by observing and imitating people in our social enviroment. If we do as we see
What is labelling and stigma
Drugs are labelled as deviant and thus people who take them are too. the label becomes a self fulfilling property

Prevent first use
Reduce harmful use
Encourage recovery
What is meant by supply reduction
Control amount, reduce accessibility and availability
