What is a drug?
a chemical ntity usd non-medically, self administered for its psychoactive effect (cognitve and behavioural)
Define Substance use
Seldf administeration of a psychoactive substanc
Define Substance dependance in terms of the DSM-V
Pattern use that meets DSM criteria. That is, shows signs of Tolerance, Withdrawal, Craving, time spent on using or obtaining th substance.
Which factors contribute to addiction?
Personality, biological factors, Social factors and Individual choice.
Why could gambling be considered an addiction?
Just as when you snort cocaine, there is a chemical change which takes place when you win money that provides the feeling of reward.
What is a total prohinition? Give an example.
It is a criminal offence to produce, distribute or posses an item. E.g. Cocaine.
What is a partial prohinition? Give an example.
Possesion of small quantities are not proscuted, yet production and distrubution or large amounts is still punishable. E.g Weed.
What is Decriminilisation?
While it is still a crime to distribute and produce it is not a crime to be in possesion of small amounts OR being caught does no results in criminak convictions but rather fines or divertion programs.
What is controlled availabilty
Items are available in known doses and are provided with qaulity and pure produce.
What is uncontrolled availability? How common is it?
Removing all prohobitions on drugs and allowing individuals decide if they use or not. Currently not implemented anywhere in th world. This idea is not supported by any Government in the world,
What are contraversies of Prohibitions? Provide examples.
Some drugs can be cheaper theraputic options for many disorders. e.g. Ketamine for Schizophrenia.
What are some recent measures taken for harm minimisation?
Pill testing and festivals, Supervised injection rooms, trials of prescription heroine.
