22
Q

All postganglionic fibers ‘piggy back’ on

A

A branch of the trigeminal to arrive at the structure that they innervate

23
Q

Preganglionic parasympathetic fibers arise from

A

Nuclei in the brain stem and synapse at 4 ganglia in the head

24
Q

Preganglionic parasympathetic fibers synapse at

A

4 ganglia in the head

  • ciliary
  • pterygopalantine

32
Q

Oculocmotor Nerve

A

CN III
Somatic motor - supplies four extrinisc eye muscles (superior, medial and inferior rectus, and inferior oblique) that move eyeball. Supplies levator palpebrae superioris muscle to elevate eyelid.
visceral motor - constricts pupils (sphincter pupillae) and ciliary muscles to make lens of eye more spherical (as needed for near vision)
Nerve damage:
Ptosis (eyelid droop), paralysis of eye muscles leading to strabismus (eyes not in parallel/deviated improperly), diplopia (double vision)

33
Q

Efferent =

A

Motor

34
Q

Trochlear Nerve

A

CN IV - means pulley
Somatic motor - supply the superior oblique muscle of the eye
Very thin, with injury can easily be torn
Damage leads to paralysis of superior oblique leading to strabismus and diplopia

35
Q

Strabismus

A

Eyes not in parallel, deviated improperly

36
Q

Diplopia

A

Double vision

37
Q

Abducens Nerve

A

CN VI
Innervates the lateral rectus eye muscle for eye abduction (which abducts the eye) = pulls away laterally
Damage results in paralysis of lateral rectus limits lateral movement of eye, diplopia

38
Q

Trigeminal Nerve

A

CN V
Branchial motor - special visceral efferent - mastication, tensor tympani, tensor palantini, mylohyoid and anterior belly of digastric
General sensory - from face and scalp as far as the top of the head, conjunctiva, bulb of the eye, teeth, tongue, typmpanic membrane

39
Q

3 Trigeminal Branches

A

CN V1 Ophthalmic nerve
CN V2 Maxillary nerve
CN V3 Mandibular nerve

40
Q

Ophthalmic Nerve

A

CN V1
Somatic sensory: Forehead, top of scalp, eyelid, top of nose
Lacrimal nerve piggybacks

41
Q

Maxillary Nerve

A

CN V2
Somatic sensory: Maxillary, sides of nose, upper lip
Zygomatic nerve piggybacks

42
Q

Mandibular Nerve

A

CN V3
Somatic sensory: Sides of face near ear, mandible
General sensation to anterior 2/3 of tongue
Auriculotemporal nerve and Lingual nerve piggybacks

43
Q

Anterior 2/3 of tongue

A

General sense CN V3 (Trigeminal Nerve, Madibulary part)

Special sense from facial nerve

44
Q

Posterior 1/3 of tongue

A

Special sense and general both glossopharyngeal

45
Q

Facial Nerve

A
Branchial motor (special visceral efferent) - supply the stapedius, stylohyoid, posterior belly of digastric muscles
General sensory - sensory to ear
46
Q

Vestibulocochlear Nerve

A

CN VIII
Conducts equilibrium and auditory sensations to brain
Cochlear branch conducts impulses for hearing, vestibular branch conducts impulses for equilibrium
Damage - loss of balance, vomiting and dizziness, deafness

47
Q

Glossopharyngeal Nerve

A

CN IV
Most components in a nerve that doesn’t go many places. At back of pharynx
Branchial motor - supplies stylopharyngeus
Visceral motor-carries sensation from carotid body and from carotid sinus (sense blood gas and bp)
Posterior 1/3 of the tongue general and special sensory

48
Q

Vagus Nerve

A

CN X - The Wanderer
Branchial motor - pharynx and larynx
Visceral motor - thorax and abdominal

49
Q

Accessory Nerve

A
CN XI (aka Spinal Accessory)
Somatic motor function - innervates trapezius and sternocleidomastoid
50
Q

Hypoglossal Nerve

A

CN XII
Innervates intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles
Damage swallowing and speech difficulties due to impaired tongue movement, if only one, deviates to one side of damaged nerve
