Week 4 notes Flashcards
What are the homeotstatic mechanisms?
HR, heart rhythm, RR, respiratory depth, MM color, CRT, pulse strength, BP, temp
What are the involuntary reflexes?
eye blink, kick, pulling back
what are the reflexes we look at during anesthesia?
palpebral, corneal, pedal, swallowing, laryngeal, pupillary light.
What are some other indicators we look at while the patient is under?
spontaneous movement, eye position, pupil size, muscle tone, nystagmus, salivary, lacrimal secretions, response to surgical stimuli
What are the four stages of anesthetic depth?
stage 1- period of voluntary movement
stage 2- period of involuntary movement (excitement phase)
stage 3- period of surgical anesthesia
stage 4- stage of anesthetic over dose
What are the 4 planes of stage 3?
plane 1- inadequate to perform surgery
plane 2- suitable for most surgical procedures
plane 3- excessively deep
plane 4- anesthetic overdose
How can you monitor HR?
palpation, stethoscope, esophageal stethoscope, electrocardiography, BP monitor (Doppler or oscillometric)
What is a normal sinus arrhythmia?
the distance between each heart beat is approx. equal
What is a sinus arrhythmia?
HR decreases during expiration and increases during inspiration.
