Capter 4 Key Terms Flashcards
Anesthetic Chambers
clear, aquarium-like box used to induce general anesthesia in small patients
Anesthetic mask
cone-shaped device used to administer oxygen and anesthetic gas to non-tubed patients
Anesthetic vaporizer
anesthetic machine that vaporizes liquid inhalant anesthetic and mixes it with a carrier gas
Asphyxiation
act of cutting off oxygen supply
Atelectasis
Collapse of a portion of all of one or both lungs
Ayre’s T piece
non rebreathing circuit with a fresh gas inlet entering at the patient end of the breathing tube at 90* angle and without a reservoir bag at the opposite end of the breathing tube
Bain coaxial circuit
non rebreathing circuit with a “tube within a tube” configuration that discharges fresh gas at the opposite end of the breathing tube
Breathing circuit
anesthetic machine that conveys the carrier gases and inhalant anesthetic to the patient and removes exhaled CO2
Carbon dioxide absorber canister
canister that holds CO2 absorbent granules
Closed rebreathing circuit
system in which the pop off valve is kept nearly or completely closed and oxygen flow is low
Common gas outlet
where O2, inhalant anesthetic, and N2O exit the anesthetic machine
Compressed gas cylinders
container that holds a large volume of pressurized gas
Compressed gas supply
system that supplies carrier gases
Endotracheal tube
tube placed in patients trachea used to transfer anesthetic gas directly from the breathing circuit into the patients trachea
Flow meter
glass cylinder that indicates the carrier gas flow
Fresh gas inlet
point where carrier and anesthetic gas enter the breathing circuit
Jackson-Rees Circuit
a non rebreathing circuit with a fresh gas inlet at the patient end of the breathing tube and a reservoir bag at the opposite end
Lack circuit
a non rebreathing circuit
Laryngoscope
device used to increase visibility of the larynx during ET tube placement.
Line pressure gauge
indicates the pressure in the intermediate pressure gas line between the pressure reducing valve and the flow meters.
Magill Circuit
a non rebreathing circuit with an overflow valve at the patient end of the breathing tube
Mapleson classification system
developed to classify non rebreathing circuits based on position of fresh gas inlet, reservoir bag, and pressure limiting valve
Non rebreathing system
machine fitted with a non rebreathing circuit
Norman mask elbow
non rebreathing circuit with fresh gas inlet at the patient end of the breathing tube and a reservoir bag at the opposite end
Oxygen flush Valve
Button or lever that rapidly delivers a large volume of pure oxygen directly to the common gas outlet or breathing circuit
Pop off valve
point of exit of an anesthetic gas from the breathing circuit
Pressure manometer
gauge that indicates pressure of gasses within the breathing circuit
Pressure-reducing valve
reduces the pressure of a compressed gas to a constant safe operating pressure
Rebreathing system
machine fitted with a rebreathing circuit
Reservoir bag
rubber or plastic bag that serves a reservoir for expired and inspired gases
Respiratory minute volume
amount of air that moves into and out of the lungs in one minute
Scavenging system
machine that disposes excess and waste anesthetic gases outside the building
semi-closed rebreathing system
system where the pop off valve is positioned partially opened and he flow of oxygen is relatively high
Tank pressure gauge
indicates the pressure of the gas remaining in a compressed gas cylinder
Tidal volume
volume of a normal breath
unidirectional valves
inspiratory valve or expiratory valve of a rebreathing circuit
vaporizer in circuit
vaporizer located in the breathing circuit
vaporizer out of circuit
vaporizer which carrier gas from flow meters flows into the vaporizer before entering the breathing circuit
