Chapter 1-2 Key Terms Flashcards
Analgesia
Absence of pain
Anesthesia
Loss of sensation
Balanced Anesthesia
Administration of multiple drugs to produce sedation, tranquilization, muscle relaxation, analgesia, or a variety of other effects needed for a particular patient.
Epidural
regional anesthesia produced by injection of a local anesthetic into the epidural space
General Anesthesia
A reversible state of unconsciousness throughout the entire body produced by administration of one or more anesthetic agents
Hypnosis
A sleep like state
Local Anesthesia
a loss of sensation in a small area of the body produced by a local anesthetic
Narcosis
drug induced sleep
Noxious
painful or physically harmful
Regional Anesthesia
Loss of sensation in a limited area of the body
Sedation
drug induced CNS depression and drowsiness
Surgical Anesthesia
Specific stage of anesthesia which there is a sufficient degree of analgesia and muscle relaxation to allow of surgery without pain or movement
Therapeutic Index
the range between LD50 and ED50
Topical Anesthesia
A loss of sensation to a body surface
Tranquilization
Drug induced state of calm
Auscultation
Examination by listening
Body Condition Score
Numerical assessment of patients weight compared to ideal weight
Borborygmus
Intestinal noises audible with or without a stethoscope
Cachexia
wasting away
Cardiac Output
total blood flow of the heart per unit of time
Colloids
Large molecular weight plasma proteins that provide oncotic pressure.
Comatose
sleep like state unresponsive to all stimuli
Consent form
form signed by client stating they have been told and understand the procedures and what could possibly go wrong
Constant rate infusion
Slow continuous administration of a drug at a rate sufficient to achieve desired effect
Crystalloids
Fluids that contain water and small molecular weight solutes and that pass freely through vascular endothelium
Cyanosis
Blue discoloration of the MM
Dead space
breathing passages and tubes that convey fresh oxygen to the alveoli but no gas exchange occurs.
Debilitated
Lacking strength, weak
drip rate
a measured rate at which fluids are given to the patient
Dyspenic
Difficulty breathing
Ecchymoses
Large bruises
Extra-Label Drug Use
use of a drug not in accordance with the label
Gastric Dilatation Volvulus
stomach fills with air and twists on it axis leading to shock, blood loss, etc.
Homeostasis
constant state within the body created and maintained by normal physiologic processes
Hypercarbia
Elevated CO2 in the blood
Hypotension
low blood pressure
Hypothermia
low body temp
Hypoxemia
low blood oxygen level
Hypoxia
low tissue oxygen level
ileus
intestinal obstruction caused by inhibition of bowel mobility
Infusion rate
How much fluid per hour a patient needs.
Inotropy
force of heart muscle contraction
Intact
possessing gonads
Lethargic
depressed but can be aroused with minimum difficulty
Level of Consciousness
patients responsiveness to stimuli

near death
Obtunded
depressed and unable to be fully aroused
Oncotic pressure
osmotic pressure provided by large molecular weight colloids
Osmolarity
measurement of the number of dissolved solute particle per unit water in body fluids
Osmotic Pressure
pressure required for water to move to a higher concentration
Petechiae
small or pin point purple discolorations of the skin or MM from hemorrhaging
Physical Status Classification
graded assessment of the patients physical condition

drugs that damage tissues if injected perivascularly
Veterinarian In Charge (VIC)
Vet responsible for the welfare and management of a particular patient
