Clarify Point A- Assessments & questionnaires provide an avenue for initial discovery
• Self-exploration opportunity for the client
• Offer tools for continued exploration
• Take into consideration who the coach is when exploring who the client is. How do these similarities/differences affect the coaching relationship?

• Help the client to create a wellness vision
• Help the client to develop a statement encompassing all of these qualities
Be the client’s partner, NOT the expert by asking powerful questions and: • Strategizing • Prioritizing • Challenging • Encouraging • Acknowledging

STEP 3 Identify the Gaps
- The gap becomes clear after completing Steps 1 & 2. Help the client answer the question: What needs to change?
- Techniques for identifying the gap include
- Open-Ended Questions
- Motivational Interviewing
- The M.I. skill of FOCUSING helps the client focus in on the gap
- Decisional Balance helps the client weigh pros & cons of changing, and to develop intrinsic motivation and a sense of autonomy

STEP 4 Declare Focus Areas
- Many wellness coaches mistake action steps for goals. Make sure you start with a big picture vision and choose areas of focus BEFORE creating goals and action steps.
- Choose up to 3-4 areas to work on at a time
- Notice the client’s energy
- Consider healthcare provider’s recommendation
- Consider client’s readiness to change
- Watch for red flags & refer when appropriate
- Depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, etc

Step 5: Goals and Action Steps
• Goals ALWAYS come from the client; never imposed by the coach
• For each focus area, create and refine short, medium & long-term goals
• Make them SMART!
• Specific
• Measurable
• Attainable
• Realistic
• Timely
• Identify internal strengths and external resources when
creating goals
• Create weekly action steps that are in support of goals
and overall vision

Step 6: Manage Progress & Accountability
- Collaborate w/your clients to discover their preferences
- Accountability is to the client’s Self, not to you. Be their ally
- No shame, no blame. Reframe failures as learning opportunities.
