WEEK 3 MORPHOLOGY PT 2 Flashcards
Discuss the appearance of cancer cells in blood smear
- Cells are monomorphic- Same size, same shape, same colour. Whereas normal cells look pleomorphic
- They have huge nuclei with little cytoplasm.
A common feature with all leukemias
- They have blasts on the peripheral blood smear
- They cause pancytopenia
Which 2 Acute tumours might present with Aur rods?
- AML ( a very few rods, just one)
-and APL (many rods in the cytoplasm)
*Rods are due to accumulation of primary granules in the cytoplasm, which makes crystalline sharp needle like structure in cytoplasm
An obvious feature, tell-tale sign of Promyelocytic leukemia
Joined looking nuclei called angel wings or collage loaf
Investigation techniques used for APL diagnosis
- Flow cytometry (U’ll see 2 fusions and one 15 $ one 19)
- FISH
For a patient presenting with myeloid leukemia, which investigation technique to use?
FISH technique, u look for t(8:21)
Megaryoblastc leukemia
Shows a few platelets budding off the memberane
Lymphoblastic anaemia
Trephine biopsy( hypercellular marrow)
Very blue due to high nucleus to cytoplasmic,ic ration
